Radar navigation, radar plotting and use of ARPA

Scope (Target audience) : The course has been designed to meet requirements of STCW section B-1/12 and is based on the guidelines of IMO Model Course 1.07, objectives 1-5.
Course provides training in the basic theory and use of Radar for those who will be in charge of a navigational watch.

Objective : The course covers, the theory necessary for understanding how radar information is obtained and displayed, the limitations and accuracy of information, the recognition of critical targets, the measurement of bearing and distances, and the use of these for fixing the ship's position and maintaining a plot of the movement of other ships as an aid to collision avoidance. Exercises in the application of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea ( COLREG 1972) will make use of the resulting plots.

  • Familiarization with the Simulator’s “Own Ship” characteristics and control
  • Review of basic radar and plotting
  • Open water exercises in the application of colreg 1972
  • Exercises in and near traffic separation schemes
